Aim to stay in the top two: Fleming
Summary

CSK coach believes it is important for his team to maintain winning momentum

With six wins out of eight matches, the Chennai Super Kings are placed second in the points table. Both their losses have come against the rampaging Kings XI Punjab, and on both occasions, Glenn Maxwell took center stage. Ahead of their game against the Mumbai Indians, CSK coach Stephen Fleming looked at the positive side of both those loses as he said, “We positively still scored close to 190 and we would like to believe that our batting has been good overall. We can tidy up when under pressure. Maxwell has put us under a lot pressure this tournament, but we have been very good in the other games. We have not over-analysed our performance, but we do know that we need to bounce back and play well against the Mumbai Indians. We need to try and get another win under our belt.” Fleming also focussed on the points table, which is interestingly poised as of now, and stressed on the fact that one minor blip could turn the tables immediately. “Mumbai can go on a run now and win four or five and be up there; it could be tough for Delhi Daredevils, but they do have the capability to get amongst the top four. All we are concentrating on is staying around the top two and winning tomorrow against the Mumbai Indians to maintain the pressure on the teams below us. We have gone on and won six, which has put us in a good position. But we know the next few games are important because the tables can turn quickly.” The Chennai Super Kings might have lost their previous game, but the spirit in the dressing room is still high. This, according to Fleming, is one of the most important things to maintain as a unit. “When you get on a winning run, the pressure tends to slide away, but as soon as you lose one, the pressure comes back. Our challenge is to maintain a good mood throughout the tournament, which we have been good at over the years. Even when we have been in trouble, we have maintained a level of calmness, which will always be the case. The players are more professional with the way they approach the game.” The batting abilities of Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum, AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell and David Miller have taken center stage in this tournament so far and Fleming had some words of praise for them. “Players are really pushing the boundaries as to what can be achieved. The interesting thing about players like Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers and others is that they are able to repeat that time and again. The skill and the courage that they show to play some of the shots are quite staggering, and I admire it every time I see it. It is amazing how much these guys are exploring what batsmanship can be. I know people question how it is going to affect the Test purists’ side of things. But just from the T20 side of things, the skill factor of these guys is unbelievable.”
