DD pacer optimistic despite a close defeat against CSK
Pepsi IPL 2014 was a forgettable tournament for the Delhi Daredevils. But this year with a whole bunch of new players and a new captain, they vow to change the team’s fortunes. They came pretty close doing so in their first game itself - against Chennai Super Kings – but finished an excruciating one run short. The beginning, however, went as per plans for them as JP Duminy’s decision of bowling first was justified with two early strikes. Nathan Coulter-Nile removed Brendon McCullum and Suresh Raina in his first spell of two overs to pull things back after the expensive first over from Albie Morkel. CSK’s bowling, however, was too strong for DD and the visitors ended up losing by one run in a humdinger. After the match, Coulter-Nile spoke to iplt20.com about his performance and the new-look DD outfit. You didn’t get the result you wanted. But would you take heart out of the fight that the team put up? It was one hell of a game of cricket and that’s what everyone wants to see. You don’t take too much heart out of a lost game. We want to win every match, so it’s a bit disappointing. You must be happy with the way you bowled upfront picking those two big wickets. I was happy. It could have gone either way. McCullum or Raina could have hit a big one. You never know. You just have to try and stick to your game plan. Despite playing only two matches last season you were one of the few players retained by the franchise. Does that tell you that you’ll get many more games this year? I don’t know about that. They probably just wanted to see if I can play cricket, and so they kept me on (laughs). Last year I didn’t really know my role and played only a couple of games. I didn’t really get a handle on how to fit into the team. This year I am glad to have played the first game. We’ll see how things unfold and take it from there. When JP Duminy won the toss, were you happy to concede 150? We were (pretty happy). 140-150 is always chaseable. I thought this was a beautiful wicket for cricket. Given that they were 59 after the first six overs, 150 was a pretty decent score for us to restrict them to. The wicket here is usually slow and low. This one has been relaid. What did you make of it? I thought it was bouncy and quicker. It was a wicket in which you wouldn’t mind turning out to play any form of the game. As one of the retained players, what do you make of the complete revamp that the DD squad has gone through this year? That’s cricket. If you don’t win games, they will either put you out of the team or they will change the team. Last year we won only two games and things had to change. That’s what has happened. I believe we have a really good bunch of people around now and we have more depth than we did last year. I hope we see people filling the gaps and take us over the rope.
