The Chennai Super Kings are unarguably the most consistent team in the short history of the IPL. However, they have also often been criticized for being slow starters, who take time to build the winning momentum. Their journey in Pepsi IPL 2014 has been no different. Despite posting a mammoth 205, CSK lost their first match to Kings XI Punjab, or rather, to Glenn Maxwell (95 off 43 balls). Now, as they prepare for their second game of the tournament, against Delhi Daredevils, R Ashwin ensures that there is nothing to worry about the team’s first loss. “This is not the first time that we have lost the first match of the tournament,” Ashwin said. “We generally start off slowly and then catch up momentum going into the tournament. So, there is nothing to worry about.” Ashwin, however, admitted that the inexperience of playing in the UAE is causing certain players, including him, to take some time to get used to the conditions. “This is the first time I am playing in the UAE and it has been a very different experience for me. The wickets have been a bit different in terms of bounce and turn, and it has taken some time to get used to them. “Every team is learning from their mistakes and experience. If you guys observed, after our first match here, the teams playing the second game (SRH and KXIP) learnt from watching us and brought the fielders in,” Ashwin said. However, Ashwin does think there is one aspect of their game that CSK need to correct going into their match against DD. The team dropped a couple of catches against KXIP, which eventually cost them the match. “We dropped a couple of catches and that’s one aspect we need to fix very soon,” Ashwin said. As for their opponents, Ashwin felt that with or without Kevin Pietersen, Delhi Daredevils are a challenging side to beat. “Duminy is in tremendous form and Dinesh Karthik has always been a brilliant player in this tournament.”
