KKR captain wants team to perform as a unit ahead of crucial tie against Rising Pune Supergiants
In their last game against Gujarat Lions, Kolkata Knight Riders had lost four wickets in their powerplay. They were reeling at 24/4 at one stage until Yusuf Pathan and Shakib al Hasan put up an unbeaten century stand to take the team to a respectable total of 158. Though KKR lost the game in the end, Gambhir took some positives from it going into their big game against Rising Pune Supergiants on Saturday and called for not individuals but the whole team to perform well as a unit. “There were good signs that people were getting runs, bowlers were performing well but we need to do it together. If you want to win a game of cricket, not one or two individuals can end up winning you a game of cricket,” Gambhir said. “If you want to win a game of cricket, all the three departments need to click. It is good when there are such performances but I don’t give too much importance to performances which doesn’t end up winning you a game of cricket. For me every run that you score that can help your team win is far more valuable than scoring big runs and end up on the losing side.” Gambhir though, did applaud the Pathan-Shakib duo for applying themselves when the team was in a spot of bother and believed it was performances like these that would instill confidence in the side. “I thought 140 would have been a good total and we ended up getting 158 in the previous game. I was happy with it especially after you were four down and you only had Andre Russell to come after Yusuf and Shakib. Getting 158 from that situation was an unbelievable effort from both of them. We can get more critical by saying that we were 10 runs short or 15 runs short but I thought the partnership that these guys got into would have given them a lot of confidence and the entire group that we can get runs from the situation we were in.” Up next KKR face a side that has had a dismal tournament so far. With just three wins from eleven games the Rising Pune Supergiants are almost out of contention for a playoffs spot. When asked if this situation would give them the liberty to play more freely and go with a no holds barred and nothing to lose kind of an approach, Gambhir said, “This is a format where you expect people to come and play freely. Whether they have got anything to lose or not doesn’t make a different because we need to go out there and play good cricket and that is all that matters. “When you turn out for any game as a professional cricketer you don’t think on those lines that you have got nothing to lose. The biggest thing that you have to lose is your pride. People play for their pride and their jersey and Pune would be up for it. They have got a lot to lose as well. No one wants to turn out on the field and get back to a losing dressing room. I would not see from a point of view that they have got nothing to play for, they also have a lot to play for and we need to play good cricket. Rising Pune Supergiants are a quality side. It is going to be even-stevens and hopefully we can play our best cricket tomorrow.”
