Delhi Daredevils batsman believes win against Kings XI Punjab has served as a morale booster
The Delhi Daredevils managed to put an end to their 11-match winless streak after defeating the Kings XI Punjab comprehensively by 5 wickets in Pune. The bowlers restricted a power-packed KXIP batting lineup to 165 and in reply their batsmen put up a valiant effort to chase down the target with a ball to spare. Yuvraj Singh and Mayank Agarwal both scored brisk half-centuries to take the team through. For Yuvraj, the satisfaction factor came from the team’s point of view, rather than his own form. “It was a big relief, not in terms of getting runs but in terms of the team winning after a string of losses which was hurting the team badly,” Yuvraj said on Friday, on the eve of DD’s match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. “We played good cricket in the first two games that we lost. We needed one win for a morale boost. It was great determination shown by the boys to get those two points and hopefully we can get a few wins from now. We are just going to go out there and be positive.” Yuvraj also added that a lot more wins under their belt will help the team zero in on a settled combination. “It is about winning games and getting those two points. The more games you play (and win), the more the team looks settled. If you don’t win too many games there is an uncertainty that the guys are not settled and you have a lot of changes. As we win a lot of games, I am sure the team will look better. We look settled at the moment. Let’s see what happens in the future.” Personally, Yuvraj did not have the best of starts to the tournament. He scored 9 and 27 in the first two games and finally looked his lethal self against Kings XI Punjab. He looked in good touch finding the sweet spot of the bat more often than not. Though he got out at a crucial juncture of the run-chase, Yuvraj was happy to spend some quality time in the middle. “You don’t have much time to settle in T20s,” he said. “In the last game I had a lot of overs to plan my innings and am glad I could spend some time in the middle. I am happy I could get some runs for the team. It was important for us to get those two points. You have a role in your team and you just try and do your best and work hard as much as you can.” When asked if he was eyeing a place in the T20 squad for the World Cup to be played next year, Yuvraj laughed it off saying, “I don’t look so far ahead. I am just playing by the day and enjoying my cricket. I have had a decent domestic season and am looking forward to this IPL. As a team we want to get Delhi Daredevils back on track and we will see what happens next.” Yuvraj definitely finds himself in a good place in the Daredevils setup especially with coach Gary Kirsten for company. He agreed that Gary had a huge positive influence on his game. “Me and Gary have a great understanding. I feel somehow Gary gets the best out of me. When Gary was the coach with the Indian team he would manage 16 players, but here managing a squad of 25 players is a lot of responsibility. He has been great for the team. I have great understanding with him and he is someone who always pushes me and tells me that I should go and win the game for the team. He gives me a lot of confidence. I am very happy working again with Gary.”
