In T20 every ball is an event, every player is a captain: Pietersen

Supergiants batsman speaks about the impending clash with KXIP

As the VIVO IPL 2016 rolls on, every win and every defeat starts to have an impact on teams ambitions of finishing in the top four. Some teams – like the Gujarat Lions – have got a head start and would want to keep the momentum, some others have won some and lost some, and a few others like Kings XI Punjab are yet to win a game. The Rising Pune Supergiants are among the teams with mixed fortunes; they have a win and a loss against their name and will be keen to beat Kings XI Punjab when the two teams clash in Mohali. The MS Dhoni-led side lost their last match to the Gujarat Lions, who had also beaten the David Miller-led Kings XI Punjab in their first game at the same venue. Speaking about the match against KXIP, scheduled to be played on Sunday, RPS’ Kevin Pietersen said, “We are just going to worry about what we do. It doesn’t matter what the opposition do. T20 cricket is about momentum and when it is with you, it is good (and) when it is against you (it is) not so good. How that works I don’t know. “No one can really put a finger how you can change momentum, but every ball is an event happening in T20 cricket,” he added, while stressing on the dynamic nature of the T20 format. “They (KXIP) have got brilliant players in their team, from the Marshes to the Maxwells to the Millers. They have got very very good players. So on any given day anybody can take you apart in a T20 fixture. We are going to make sure that we are on our game more than we were on our game yesterday or the day before,” he added. Looking back to the defeat to the Lions and the lessons from that match, Pietersen said, “Where we would be looking to improve – maybe we could have got a few more runs the other night; maybe we could have bowled a little bit better. But we come up against opposition who have got wonderful players at the top of their order and (Gujarat Lions) were going target the first six overs of the game. You just come unstuck. Sometimes it just doesn’t happen, everybody is doing what they can and you are going to lose games. It is (about) how you respond to losing games. It is how you deal with them and how you come back tomorrow. It’s a long tournament,” he reflected. As they look to regroup and get back their momentum, the Supergiants can drawn on the wealth of experience that they have in their side. Guided by coach Stephen Fleming, the team has quite a few players who have captained their national sides. Besides MS Dhoni they have Steven Smith, Faf du Plessis and Pietersen himself. Discussing the benefits of having such a strong group, he said, “It’s fun because you are able to draw on resources that you sometimes would never have had and you can draw on experience. So it’s a good thing and the great thing about it is that there is no one who pushes to do anything or strives to be the best leader in the team. We all just get on and just play. MS (Dhoni) is the skipper, he makes the decisions. All we can do is hand down information that he can use if he wants to use and we back whatever decision he makes. It doesn’t really mean that each one of us are captains on the day. I actually think that the eleven that take the field have to captain themselves. They have got a responsibility to MS and to the coaches, to captain themselves and the team. So there might be four ‘C’s next to certain names in the team, but I actually think that in T20 cricket where every ball is an event, everyone is a captain.” Speaking about the camaraderie in the change room, Pietersen said, “It’s been outstanding (how the team has come together). Everyone has got along real well. They are all mixing together. It’s been actually been an easy transition, it feels that we have been playing each other for ages. It’s been brilliant!”
