Morne Morkel looks to enjoy the challenge of bowling against his national teammate
Kolkata Knight Riders started their Pepsi IPL 2015 campaign with a comprehensive win in their tournament opener against Mumbai Indians. Next up they face Royal Challengers Bangalore, who boast of a strong batting line-up with the likes of Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli. While the KKR bowlers looked in good touch in the first half of the Mumbai Indians innings, their bowling faltered towards the end and a couple of dropped catches by the fielders didn’t do them any good. KKR cannot afford such blips while facing RCB and would be looking to pull up their socks on that front. However, a huge threat called AB de Villiers looms large in front of them for their match on Saturday. AB de Villiers is in ominous touch after the World Cup campaign and it will be no surprise if he continues his good run against KKR at the Eden Gardens. Morne Morkel, KKR’s Man-of-the-match in the previous game, believed his side was up for the challenge against his national teammate AB de Villiers and it was about executing plans well to be successful against him. “You can’t really plan against AB de Villiers. He is a world-class batsman,” Morkel said. “We can only look to enjoy the contest between bat and ball and try to execute our plans well. AB has got all the shots in the book and he scores 360 degrees round the ground. He reads the game too well. I think you need to think on your feet and just try to enjoy the experience and execute as best as possible.” When questioned as to what makes de Villiers so successful, Morkel answered, “One thing about him is he reads the game quite well. As soon as you do all your field placements, he will sum it up and he will work a game plan around that. We have all seen him over the last couple of years; all his reverse sweeps and sweeps shots that he has played; it is hard to bowl to a guy who can not only hit a short ball for six, but also if you just miss a yorker. “These are quality players and the margins are so small that they capitalise really well. With quick outfields like the Eden Gardens, it is tough to bowl to guys like that. We as a bowling unit prepare to enjoy the challenge and just enjoy the atmosphere. The other night here was special to play and hopefully we can have another entertaining game. It is good for cricket.” After his stellar bowling performance against Mumbai Indians, that included two wickets, a maiden and fifteen dot balls, Morkel said he was in a good space with regards to his bowling, and was fit and raring to go. Morkel was more than willing to take up any responsibility handed over to him. “I am still feeling 100 percent and feel like I am 21. It is a long tournament and for me it is going to be important to manage myself at nets and my work routine. Also, as long as the selectors or the team want me to take the new ball, I am quite happy to do that.” Morkel was also happy with depth in the seam bowling department. “We are quite fortunate to have Pat Cummins. Cummins also bowls in the high 140s and 150s. He has played a couple of games in the World Cup and has a lot of skill. Azhar Mahmood brings something different which can also play a key role later on when the wicket gets a bit slower. Andre Russell is bowling quick, he can take the new ball as well. There are a lot of combinations we can play with in this KKR squad. We have got lot of options.”
