SRH coach looks forward to beating RR and taking campaign forward
The Sunrisers Hyderabad have their task cut out for them when they take on the Rajasthan Royals on May 7 in Mumbai. The David Warner-led side will need to win most of their remaining five games to make a play for a spot in the final four of the Pepsi IPL 2015. Currently holding the seventh position in the points table, SRH have an uphill task as they strive to keep their campaign for the trophy alive. But the team in orange are positive and looking to give the opposition a run of their money. Discussing the team’s precarious position while speaking to the media ahead of the match, coach Tom Moody said, “We were in a similar position last year as well where we are now, where our destiny is in our hands. With five games left, we are playing some of the opponents that we are challenging for the final four spot. It is a tight competition and every single game from this point is going to be critical and it’s going to have a real shift in the table.” “I think our chances of qualifying (for the final four spots) are realistic with five games left. At the end of the day we will like to win five out of five. We have seen in T20 cricket that momentum is a funny thing (and) that’s a possibility. But realistically if we win three or four of the five then we have got a good chance,” he added. “Lot of teams are well balanced and so everyone has got an opportunity to find themselves in the top four. Probably the Kings XI Punjab are the (only) ones that have fallen a wayside a little bit,” he said speaking about the competition and the fluidity in the points table. With a tough ask ahead of them, when asked if the team is dependent on the contribution of their openers – David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan, the SRH coach observed, “I think every team in the tournament are dependent on their openers. The team that we are playing tomorrow, have (Ajinkya) Rahane and (Shane) Watson (at the top of their order who) are key to their campaign. You knock out both of those guys early on, you expose the Rajasthan Royals. It’s no different with the Kolkata Knight Riders, you knock out Gautam Gambhir or Robin Uthappa (and) you get right into the thick of it.” “We haven’t absolutely nailed our middle order as well as we would like and I see that as more of an opportunity than a concern in a tournament like this. We have got an assured window to gain momentum and gain confidence as a team and as individuals.” Elaborating on the situation with the middle order, he explained that it should be seen as opportunity, as against being seen as a weakness or a concern. “To me, whoever comes in at No 3, 4, 5 or 6 for us tomorrow has an opportunity for a match-winning innings. The opportunity will be theirs if we lose an early wicket, which we hope we don’t, but if we do it’s an opportunity for someone to go in there and take that and play an innings of substance for us. And once that opportunity is taken, it’s amazing the confidence that the individual and group take from it. To me, we’ve got five games; there are five opportunities for the guys to put their hand up and make a considerable contribution to our middle-order,” he pointed out. The skipper, Warner has played a crucial role in few of the team’s wins. Speaking about the explosive opener and his leadership, which has been key to their campaign, Moody said, said “Davy is an exceptional individual in many ways. He has shown in the past 24 months that he has not only grown as a person, but he has also shown over the past few weeks (how much he has grown) as a person, a player and as a leader. He has been excellent with his leadership on the field. He has embraced the challenge and he has done a great job of it.” “It certainly hasn’t affected the brand of cricket that he brings (to the table). The real stand out quality that I see in David Warner is that he is a cricketer who is never satisfied. He is hungry for success and he constantly wants to develop. I think with that mindset he is always going to be challenged by the next opportunity, the next game and the next series. He always wants to be a major component contributing to any cause.” The coach attributed Warner’s growth to his finding a good balance on and off the field. “I think he has got a balance of life now. Yes, he is a playing a lot of cricket but all the top players in the world are playing a lot of cricket and I think he has got a good balance on and off the field. And on the field he has got that appetite and he is hungry and continues to grow as an individual.” When the team take the field against RR on Thursday, they will need their captain to once again lead from the front and help notch another victory against their name.
