KXIP captain says the team has learnt their lessons from the loss to Lions
Kings XI Punjab will look to open their account in the wins column of VIVO IPL 2016 standings when they take on the Delhi Daredevils in Delhi on March 15. The visitors have a 9 – 7 win-loss record against the hosts in the Indian Premier League and would like to stay ahead in the tally. They have learnt their lessons from the loss to the Gujarat Lions in Mohali and are working to ensure that they rectify the mistakes. Analysing the team’s performance in their opening match, captain David Miller said, “It wasn't a good game. We’ll forget about that one. We learnt a few things from that game. Personally, I learnt a lot. I think we were short by 20 runs short. It’s tough defending when you’re 15 to 20 runs short. We have played really well in Delhi and we have been here for about three days. So it’s nice to get into the nets. We have done some fielding in the ground and are familiar with the ground conditions here. Obviously, we have spoken to a few bowlers here and we have some plans.” “I think the one over of (Dwayne) Bravo where (Glenn) Maxwell and I got out was a bit of a turning point for them. That’s the way the game goes and we have learnt a lot from that,” he explained. Asked if it is hard for the middle-order to play with the ball getting older in the middle overs, Miller said, “That’s something we have spoken about. As I said, Maxwell and I got out in one over. So it’s a big momentum swing right there. There were two new batters and they had to rebuild so that was a big negative. But that’s the nature of the game. We need to be flexible. We need to learn to adapt. Mohali has big boundaries. They were bowling a lot of good cutters. We should be focussing on hitting it in the gaps and running twos instead of taking on the bowlers early on. I think it’s about being clever in the middle period. It’s a fine line because you don’t want to lose wickets and you want to keep the runs coming. It’s about finding that balance.” “We have to sum it up (situation) as quick as we can. The other night we had to rebuild and limit the damage. Which they did really well but two wickets in one over was the big turning point. We have to sum up the situation. If we get going we need to keep going but if we lose early wickets we need to hold back a bit and build partnerships.” Discussing the slower balls and if the batsmen are going too hard at the ball and losing out as a result, he replied, “I don’t think so. Obviously, every batsman is different. I think it just boils down to being smart; who is thinking smarter than the opposition. They bowled really well the other night. They bowled in the right zone and used the cutters really well. We just have to play smarter in the middle period. I’m a big believer in ‘if you sense, if you get a sniff that you can take down a bowler, then you should take him down’. It’s only 20 overs so you have to see how the night is going and go with the flow.” On a more lighter note while speaking about his batting and looking forward to hitting sixes, the KXIP captain said, “I am thinking of hitting the farthest six in this tournament as well. If the balls in the area, it needs to go for six.” While discussing the bowling composition of his team, Miller said, “I know it is T20 cricket and the batters are always going to come at the bowlers. I think we gave away way too many boundaries. We will look to create a bit more pressure at the top and bowl more dot balls and possibly concede more ones than boundaries. They (Gujarat Lions) started really well with (Aaron) Finch. A few balls we were unlucky as they got the edge and the ball went over the top, but I think we’re going to work towards keeping it a lot more simple this time.” “Mohit (Sharma) is a serious addition to our team this year. It’s great having him on board. He’s a great team man as well. I think the younger guys can learn a lot from him. I think his role is to bowl in the end. He has some really good variations. We were fortunate with Marcus Stoinis the other night. I think we’ll be using him more at the start and at the end,” Miller said while talking about the new addition to the team this season. As they look forward to the match against the Daredevils, KXIP are likely to be tested by South Africans Quinton de Kock, Chris Morris, JP Duminy and Imran Tahir who are likely to play key roles for the hosts in the match. Asked about his plans against fellow South Africans in the forthcoming game, the KXIP skipper said, “Yes we do (have plans against them). I have obviously played a lot with them. I have some insights, but T20 cricket is all about the day. Whichever teams rocks up mentally and takes the opportunity when it presents itself comes out on top. All teams this time around are really good. I just think we need to be more switched on and take the games as they come.”
