SRH coach glad to have seven quality overseas players to choose from to complement local talent
Sunrisers Hyderabad made some fine signings at the Pepsi IPL 2015 Player Auction, beefing up their overseas-players cupboard with the likes of Kevin Pietersen, Trent Boult, Eoin Morgan and Kane Williamson. Although Pietersen will not be available to them for the initial part of Pepsi IPL 2015, SRH coach Tom Moody believes it will not diminish their batting strength. “We are very confident of the depth of our batting,” Moody said on the eve of SRH’s first game of the tournament against CSK in Chennai. “Yes, we don’t have Kevin Pietersen here but we have Eoin Morgan, Kane Williamson, Ravi Bopara and Moises Henriques here. Those players along with the talented KL Rahul and Naman Ojha boast a pretty strong top-six.” Over the past couple of seasons, bowling has been considered SRH’s major strength with the likes of Dale Steyn, Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar forming the core of the attack. This year they have bolstered it further with Boult and Praveen Kumar. Speaking about the variety in their overseas department, Moody said it gives the team the freedom to choose different combinations of four players depending on the conditions and the opposition. He also explained the reason for acquiring Praveen Kumar. “If we want to go in with a combination of playing all batsmen as our overseas players, we will definitely need every single Indian pace bowler, and we are very lucky to have quality in our ranks,” Moody said. “Another reason for taking Praveen was we were a bit concerned about the injuries to both Ishant and Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar). The other reason was that we recognize the tournament is a long, hard one and to have that depth of quality is very important.” While having a plan B in the form of Praveen, Moody was pleased to confirm that both Ishant and Bhuvi were 100 per cent fit despite their recent lack of match practice. While Ishant missed the entire World Cup with injury, Bhuvneshwar managed only one outing. “Both are very fine bowlers. Bhuvneshwar was our best bowler last season by the length of a stride. I hope he repeats his performance. He is a highly skilled bowler,” Moody said. “We have played two practice matches in which both have played and none of them have shown any sign of lack of match practice or any fitness issues. They are both ready and rearing to go.”
