Summary
MI look to retain momentum against DD
What A rejuvenated Mumbai Indians side will be pitted against the Delhi Daredevils in Match 39 of Pepsi IPL 2015. MI have four wins from nine matches and are barely off the floor of the points table. Since losing their first four matches, MI have come back strongly winning four of their next five matches – the only defeat in that five-match run coming against the Delhi Daredevils. Each of MI’s four victories this season has been convincing; they beat RCB by 18 runs, defeated SRH by 20 runs, got the better of Rajasthan Royals by eight runs (after posting 187 runs on the board) and most recently bagged two points against Kings XI Punjab after beating them by 23 runs. There is plenty of talent in the lineup, and it is just a case of all parts coming together, as has been happening in the last couple of matches. The Delhi Daredevils have just as many points as MI, but are one place higher in the table courtesy a better net run rate. The problem for DD has been that they have failed to sustain momentum after a win. Their sequence of results this season reads: Lost, Lost, Won, Won, Lost, Won, Lost, Won, Lost. In their previous outing, they first of all conceded to the Rajasthan Royals plenty of runs, and fell short of their target of 190 by 14 runs. Given how closely teams are packed in the middle of the table, DD Captain JP Duminy and coach Gary Kirsten will have told the boys that every defeat from here on will make their task of progressing to the Playoffs that much more difficult. When 05 May 2015, 8p.m. IST Where Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai The Protagonists Runs from Lendl Simmons has been a fairly regular feature of Mumbai Indians’ matches. However, given he is more the anchor-the-innings kind of player, MI need quick runs from the other players – especially from their skipper Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard. If Rohit can shift gears and find the boundaries without too much effort, Pollard – if he gets into that zone - can destroy bowling attacks in a matter of minutes. On the bowling front, Mitchell McClenaghan and Lasith Malinga have formed a formidable pair and MI will look towards them to do plenty of damage with the ball. The need of the hour for DD is one convincing win – one performance that will boost the confidence in the dressing room. And the two men who are capable of delivering that kind of performance with the bat are skipper JP Duminy and Yuvraj Singh. On the bowling front, DD need to get Imran Tahir back into the mix; the South African is not only a wicket-taking option, but is also a bundle of positive energy which can rub off onto the rest of the team. Contests to look-forward to Rohit Sharma taking strike against Zaheer Khan promises to make for an interesting duel. The Mumbai Indians captain’s contests against the Delhi Daredevils leg-spinning pair of Amit Mishra and Imran Tahir too promises to be interesting. The last time these two teams met, the DD opener Sheryas Iyer had a field day against Mitchell McClenaghan and Harbhajan Singh. The youngster certainly has the psychological edge heading into this contest. It will be interesting to see how he will shape up against them this time around. Previous Meetings The head to head from previous contests between the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils stands at 8-7 in favour of the latter. In contests at the Wankhede Stadium though, MI have a 3-1 win-loss record against DD. When these two teams met at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium in Delhi earlier this season, the hosts rode on a 154-run partnership between opener Shreyas Iyer and one-drop JP Duminy and posted a formidable total of 190 runs. They then came out to defend, kept picking up wickets at regular intervals and restricted the visitors to 153 for 9. The leg-spinner Imran Tahir returned the most successful bowler of the match, picking up three wickets for 22 runs in his four overs. Trivia Mumbai Indians have the poorest economy rate of all the eight teams in Pepsi IPL 2015 – 8.87. The Delhi Daredevils have realised 23 wickets & 28 wickets from their pacers and spinners respectively in Pepsi IPL 2015. In contrast, MI have realised 29 wickets from their pacers and only 14 wickets from their spinners. Lendl Simmons has scored more runs than any other player who has played for MI in the 14 IPL matches he has been part of the Mumbai Indians side; he has an aggregate of 633 runs from 14 innings, which includes one century and six half-centuries. Rohit Sharma has the second-best aggregate with 407 runs from 14 innings. What Next Mumbai Indians head southwards to Chennai for their match against Chennai Super Kings on 8 May.
