MI, KXIP vie for first points at Wankhede
What The Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab will look to post their first points on the board when they go head to head in match seven of Pepsi IPL 2015. Both teams have already taken the field once so far this season, but do not have returns to show. While MI were outclassed by KKR in the opening fixture of the season, KXIP finished second-best to Rajasthan Royals in Friday’s clash in Pune. When 12 April 2015, 8p.m. IST Where Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai The Protagonists Rohit Sharma is very much of a rhythm player; when he is on song, no matter who the bowler or what the conditions, he will find the gaps. His unbeaten 98 against the Kolkata Knight Riders on the opening day of the season was a mature effort – just the kind you tend to expect with a player bestowed with the responsibilities of captaincy. MI need him to play a similar role right through the season. Among others, MI need Aaron Finch and Kieron Pollard to fire with the bat. Kings XI Punjab will expect more from their batsmen. Virender Sehwag, Glenn Maxwell and David Miller can be ruthless and flay any attack. However, in KXIP’s previous match against RR, the trio only contributed 30 runs from 27 balls, and they will be the first to admit their team expects much more from them. The reputation of the trio is such that aggressive shot from them and more often than not the panics and looks at changing things around, playing right into their hands. On the bowling front, Mitchell Johnson is the enforcer in the lineup. Not only does he bowl quick consistently, he also unsettles the batsmen with his uncomfortable and intimidating lengths. Contests to look-forward to Lasith Malinga bowling to the explosive Glenn Maxwell and David Miller will be one of the many interesting contests one could expect in this match. Another contest that could materialize is if Mumbai Indians include leg-spinner Sheryas Gopal in their XI and he gets to bowl at Maxwell. In Pepsi IPL 2014, Maxwell – despite the devastating form he was in - was troubled by leg-spinners; Amit Mishra, Piyush Chawal, Shreyas, Yuzvendra Chahal and Imran Tahir had dismissed him at various times in the tournament. Previous Meetings The head to head between the Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab reads seven wins a piece from 14 clashes. MI were one of two teams (the other being Kolkata Knight Riders) to defeat KXIP in Pepsi IPL 2014. Trivia Over the last two seasons, the Mumbai Indians have dropped only one match in 13 outings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After 29 matches as captain in the IPL, Rohit Sharma has 17 wins under his belt – just as many as Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had after their first 29 matches as captain. Only Shane Warne had more wins in his first 29 matches as captain in the IPL – 19. Lasith Malinga has picked up a wicket in each of the 9 IPL matches he has played against Kings XI Punjab. However he has finished with an economy rate of 8 or more in four of those 9 matches. What Next Mumbai Indians will be seen in action next at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad on April 14 when they clash with the Rajasthan Royals.
