Preview: Match 32 – DD v SRH
Summary

Can KP and co. upset rejuvenated Sunrisers?

What Match 32 of Pepsi IPL 2014 will see the Delhi Daredevils pitted against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Delhi Daredevils lie at the floor of the table with just two wins from half their season’s league fixtures. The team has consistently posted competitive totals on the board, yet the bowlers have struggled to defend them. In their most recent outing against the Kolkata Knight Riders, DD posted 160 runs, yet could not contain their opponents, who ran away with the match in 18.2 overs. SRH, on the other hand, come into this contest off a morale-boosting win over the Rajasthan Royals. Despite posting a modest 134 runs, their bowling attack fired in unison, strangled their opponents, struck at regular intervals and eventually dismissed RR for 102 to win by 32 runs. It has become somewhat of a habit for SRH to defend low scores. SRH are currently placed mid-table – with three wins from seven outings – and they will be keen to get two more points on the board before they head back to Hyderabad for a string of home fixtures. When Saturday, May 10, 2014, 4 pm IST Where Ferozeshah Kotla, Delhi The Protagonists Delhi Daredevils have been very well served by the likes of Quinton de Kock, Murali Vijay and Dinesh Karthik at various points in time. But the one batsman who has steadily performed for the team – irrespective of the position he has come out to bat on or the number of overs remaining – is JP Duminy. The South African generally takes a little time to settle down – as his strike-rate of 86.04 when he has batted in the first 15 overs indicates. However, in the final five overs, he has been unstoppable, scoring at a strike-rate of 225.33. For Sunrisers Hyderabad, either Shikhar Dhawan, Aaron Finch or David Warner needs to get a big score. All three batsmen have the strokes to force the issue in the latter overs, and hence it is important that they spend time out in the middle before opening up to play powerful shots. Notes from Previous match Delhi Daredevils v Kolkata Knight Riders: DD coach Gary Kirsten will have made a few notes during the match against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite having such a formidable batting line-up, the DD innings had as many as 10 overs in which they scored a run-a-ball or less. The constant fall of wickets too didn’t help; barring skipper Kevin Pietersen, every batsman got off to starts, yet the highest score of the innings was JP Duminy’s 40. On the other hand, when KKR came out to bat, the DD bowlers did not build pressure; and the KKR innings had only 25 dot deliveries. Sunrisers Hyderabad v Rajasthan Royals: The SRH’s coach’s dairy will predominantly have notes about the batsmen, especially the top order, who failed to stitch together partnerships. The longest that a SRH pair batted in the match against RR was for four overs. Thereafter, SRH kept losing wickets frequently and that is definitely an area the team needs to work on. The positive from the match was the form of the bowlers, who came good as a unit and successfully defended a low total. Previous Meetings Sunrisers Hyderabad have a 100 percent record in contests against the Delhi Daredevils. The two teams have so far met on three occasions and SRH have prevailed every single time. When these two teams met in Dubai earlier this season, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 184 and held their nerves to restrict the Delhi Daredevils to 180 for four to win by a narrow margin of four runs. The highlight of that particular game was the unbeaten 128-run partnership between SRH’s two overseas heavyweights – Aaron Finch and David Warner. Trivia The Hyderabad franchise (including the days of the Deccan Chargers) has the best record in defending sub-140 totals. They’ve won 41.18 percent of their matches when they’ve posted 140 or less batting first. What Next The Delhi Daredevils will step out for their first away fixture of the India leg of Pepsi IPL 2014 when they travel to Bengaluru to take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 13. Sunrisers Hyderabad, on the other hand, head home for the first time this season to take on the defending champions Mumbai Indians on May 12.
