SRH mentor VVS Laxman happy with team’s progress but refrains complacency ahead of next fixture
Sunrisers Hyderabad are in a good space after having won three of their games on the trot. It had all that you could ask of from a winning team; bowlers restricting oppositions to a decent total and the batsmen chasing them with ease. David Warner has been in outstanding form and giving him good company at the other end is Shikhar Dhawan, who has showed glimpses of coming back to form with a half-century and a patient 45 against Kings XI Punjab in the previous game. For Sunrisers, Shikhar coming back to form is a ‘huge positive’ as stated by team mentor VVS Laxman, who was equally impressed by some top-class bowling performances. Next, they face Rising Pune Supergiants, who are coming off a string of loses - four on the bounce to be precise. They almost looked like winning their previous game against Kolkata Knight Riders but for that decisive six from Umesh Yadav that sealed those aspirations. Though coming off losses, Laxman was wary of the quality in the Pune side and labeled their next game as ‘very important’. “Pune will be looking forward to a win and that is why it is going to be a very important match against them,” Laxman said. “They have got an exceptionally talented and experienced side with captain MS Dhoni leading from the front. I am sure they will look to bounce back strongly. We as a team are really pleased with the way the last two games have gone for us and are looking forward to continuing the momentum. We just need to stick to our plans and execute them properly. I believe if we do that, with the talent that we have got in our playing eleven and the squad, we can beat the best sides in the competition. It is just about being as consistent as possible and executing our plans.” The batting has been one of the problems for the Superigants with their batsmen not able to score at a brisk rate. They have failed to put up big totals on the board and have fallen short while chasing - barring the lone match against Mumbai Indians were they were asked to chase just 122 in their very first game of the competition. Laxman though believed Pune had a quality batting line-up. “I believe Pune has got a very formidable batting line-up. Lot of people talk about Ajinkya Rahane, Steve Smith or Faf du Plessis being very similar but they are all extraordinary T20 players. We cannot be complacent or underestimate the batting strength of Pune. We are very mindful.” Laxman also stated they would be mindful of the spin duo of two Ashwins - Ravichandran Ashwin and leg-spinner Murugan Ashwin. While he was impressed by young M Ashwin’s wicket-taking abilities at a good economy rate, he also felt the onus was on R Ashwin to play the leader’s role in the bowling department. “I am very impressed with the way the young leggie - M Ashwin has performed so far in the tournament,” he said. “We all knew that he had very good talent because when we had done our research on the talented players - he was one among them especially as a leg-spinner who can pick up wickets. That is the beauty of leg-spinners, they are wicket-taking bowlers. His economy is also very good considering that this is just his first IPL. “R Ashwin has been bowling at a different level since the 2015 World cup. I am sure as a senior member in that side, he would want to contribute and get a win for Pune. He has done exceedingly well and taken the responsibility of being the lead bowler for India over the last 15 to 20 months. MS Dhoni is really lucky to have two quality spinners at his disposal and it goes without saying that Dhoni will be looking forward to using Ashwin against David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan.”
