Tahir gains confidence from success of spinners in IPL
Summary

DD leg-spinner also hopes his recent experiences will come in handy

Languishing at the bottom of the Pepsi Indian Premier League 2014 table, the Delhi Daredevils have a tough task ahead of them with six games still remaining in the league phase of the tournament. The Kevin Pietersen-led side has lost six of the eight matches so far and is striving to succeed. Imran Tahir, who was brought into the side with the team in a difficult situation, has joined in the efforts to change DD’s fortunes. While speaking to the media at the Palam ground in Delhi ahead of their match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the leg-spinner said, “The team hasn’t been doing well, but I hope that I can do something to help change the situation. We have been working hard and that is there for everyone to see. But sometimes, things don’t go your way, but that is not due to a lack of hard work. Even if we can win four of the remaining six matches, we can be justified.” Tahir is also well aware that spinners are getting success in the tournament, and he draws inspiration from that. While discussing the role of tweakers in IPL 2014, he mentioned, “Yes, I am seeing that spinners have got success in the tournament. They play a key role in any tournament. It is a bit difficult for leg-spinners, as it is a little harder for us to be accurate, as compared to finger or left-arm spinners. The wicket at the Fersozeshah Kotla usually suits spinners, and I hope that it will this time around too.” Tahir, who was successful in the World T20 for South Africa, was used by Proteas skipper, Faf du Plesssis, after the powerplay. Speaking about his role in DD, he said, “I have not bowled in the powerplays, but if the captain asks me to, and if the team requires me to, then I will find a way to bowl in those overs and try to give my best. If the team doesn’t require it, then I prefer bowling after six overs.” When asked if the experience of bowling in Bangladesh during the recently concluded World T20 would help him out in India, Tahir replied affirmatively. And when asked if having worked with Gary Kirsten earlier and having played alongside some of the players in DD, like JP Duminy and Wayne Parnell, is an added advantage, he said, “Yes. To an extent, there is an advantage. They know me and know my game, so they will have inputs for me. I have also played opposite some of the Indian players, so that helps as well.” While speaking about the inputs he received from legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne, he said, “I appreciate his help. Warne spoke to me more about the basics like grip, etc. I am a different type of bowler. One good thing was that he didn’t ask me to change anything, which is a positive; otherwise when you go for advice, people suggest changes in action and other such things. And he also spoke to me about mental strength and suggested some exercises, which help. He talked about not letting the batsman know how he has affected you after he has hit you.” “I have always gone to Abdul Qadir (former Pakistan cricketer) for advice. I have learnt quite a bit from him because my bowling style matches his to some extent,” Tahir said.
