KKR bowling mentor pleased with tight tussle on points table & bowlers’ dominance
Kolkata Knight Riders are riding a crest after winning their last three matches in Pepsi IPL 2015. Now, as the league phase of the tournament has entered a stage where teams are fighting hard to get into the Playoffs, KKR’s next challenge is against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. Speaking on the eve of the game, KKR’s bowling mentor, Wasim Akram, said both teams will be under equal pressure to win the contest and that will make it even more exciting. “Stating the obvious, we will have to win tomorrow,” Akram said. “But we are playing Mumbai Indians in their own den. They are in good nick – they won five on the trot before losing their last game and I think the pressure will be equal on both sides. “We are in the last leg of the league phase and we still don’t know which teams are going to make the top four. This is the most interesting IPL in that regards.” Akram was pleased with the way the bowlers have fared in this tournament, defying the general notion that T20 is strictly a batsman’s game. “The spinners as well as fast bowlers are getting wickets. We have seen a lot more variations from the bowlers as compared to the last couple of years. That means the bowlers are also evolving.” As for the bowling attack of KKR, Akram was of the opinion that it is a complete one and filled with variety. “KKR’s bowling is exceptional and my job is very easy,” the former Pakistan fast bowler said. “When you have fast bowlers like Umesh Yadav, Morne Morkel, Andre Russell and Azhar Mahmood and spinners like Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla, Brad Hogg and Shakib Al Hasan, there is not much you have to do as a coach. “We have different kinds of spinners and fast bowlers who are actually bowling fast. They are using the short ball more effectively than the pacers from other teams. We also have wicket-taking bowlers and that is why we are so consistent. “My job is mainly to talk to them about field set-ups and have plan A and B for the top batsmen of the opposition.” Akram also heaped praise on KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir for his attacking leadership. “Gautam Gambhir is one of the best captains in the IPL,” he said. “He always goes for wickets and not for dot-balls. Even in the 15th or 16th over if there is a new batsman at the crease, he will have a short-leg and slip. He puts pressure on the batsman at least for a couple of balls and makes good changes.”
