We need to bat better in the first six overs: Rohit Sharma
Summary

MI captain looks forward to an exciting game against CSK

In pursuit of a win against their name, the Mumbai Indians will take on the Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday evening. The Rohit Sharma-led side have lost all their three matches thus far and have suffered a further setback in losing opener Aaron Finch to injury. MI's opening combination has always been unsettled, and with the captain batting in the middle-order and the Australian out of the picture, they are forced to use a new pair at the top to give them the required starts. Asked if Lendl Simmons, who has opened for the team in the past with some success, is likely to be back at the spot, Rohit held his cards close to his chest. He said, “I cannot reveal that. We will decide depending on what happens in the training session today and we will see what is the best combination for tomorrow.” Rohit, who has successfully opened for India for some time now and scored an unbeaten 98 in MI’s tournament opener, batted in the middle-order in the next two games, but returned without opening his account. However, while discussing the possibility of him returning to the opener’s spot, he said, “Looking at the balance and the combination of the team it is better for me to bat at No. 4. I don’t know if I will open the innings in the games to come, but as I said, everything depends on the balance of the team. If we get the balance of the team right, it doesn’t matter whether I bat up the order or down the order. If we get the balance (right), I will bat wherever I feel like or the team feels like. Right now, I feel I am better off holding myself at No. 4. Asked if he is uncomfortable batting at No. 4, the MI skipper explained, “IPL is such that you have players coming in from various countries, various cities. So in the first few weeks you try to look for that combination or balance of the team and try to get used to the new players coming into your team, try to get a feel of what the guys are capable of doing. It is very important that you try and understand that well. I have been trying to understand all the guys and I have understood each guy and what he is capable of doing. If you lose games, a lot of questions will be asked, but if you win games the question of balance does not come up even if we would have changed the team. The only reason we are making so changes is to get the combination right. I feel that once we start winning, which will start from tomorrow, everything will fall in place and we will get what we want.” Discussing the team’s batting, he observed, “While batting, in the first six overs we need to bat better. We are losing a few wickets in the first six overs, so our focus is to bat well in the first six overs. Despite batting so poorly in the first six overs we have managed to post around the 160-run mark in the three matches. So that is an area of concern and we have looked to address the issue.” “Obviously, when you lose a match it is because you play poorly in all the departments. So we need to focus on how we can do better,” the MI captain explained saying his team needed to work on all three disciplines. The captain is a vital cog in the team’s batting and it is perceived that the side relies on him. Speaking about his role, Rohit said, “I don’t think any team relies on one individual player. It is 11 players who need to go out and deliver. If I score a 100 and if we don’t take wickets it doesn’t matter - you know if we lose the game like what happened in Kolkata (against the Kolkata Knight Riders) which is a good case in point. None of the teams in the world rely on one player; it has to be contributions from all the players, whether it is 10 runs or five overs or taking two wickets in successive overs to change the momentum of a game. That is what I feel as a captain. I look at contributions from everyone and not just one player.” On the bowling front, left-arm spinner J Suchith has impressed the captain. “His skill set and everything looks to be in order. He knows what he wants to do; he is a very smart cricketer. I am very impressed with his attitude so far. He has played two games and he has shown that he can do the job for us at this level. He is a very good prospect and we will see a lot of him during the tournament,” Rohit mentioned. Looking forward to the game ahead, Rohit said, “It will be a good game, it will be an exciting game, playing against Chennai Super Kings is always good. They have won both their games. We know their strengths, we know their weaknesses. So we will try and work accordingly and do whatever is best for our team.”
