On the extreme right corner of Delhi Capitals’ dugout, one key member was sitting anxiously as the already thrilling encounter against the Kolkata Knight Riders entered the Super Over stage. There was an air of nervousness around but no team was showing it. It could only be felt within.

For Sourav Ganguly, a man known to take complete control of the ship when it encounters rough waters, this was new territory. He is no longer playing and cannot make those magical changes as captain or chase down imposing totals with his mighty hits.

As an advisor, his role is to see the talented bunch realize their potential and emerge as new heroes. And when they did that after a long evening on Saturday, it was ‘Dada’ who was the happiest man in the dugout. He jumped up and down, hugged his fellow coaching staff members and evoked memories of the famous Lord’s balcony. Mohammed Kaif was an architect of that win in London and he was the first one to get a hug from his former captain.

In an interview with iplt20.com, the Indian legend shared his immediate thoughts following the exciting win.

As Team India’s captain, you’ve witnessed so many thrilling games. How different was this?

This was more difficult as I can’t bat or bowl. This was a fantastic win. Kagiso Rabada’s Super Over and the ball that he bowled to Andre Russell is probably going to be the ball of the IPL. To bowl that kind of a delivery to Andre Russell, who is probably in the form of his life, is unbelievable.

This team needed this win. They did not have a great season last year. It’s a young team. These sorts of wins change the confidence. It is still a long season, but this win is more than just a win

Young Indian players form the core of Delhi Capitals. How pleasing is it for you to to see them perform like that?

These are top-class Indian players. Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw are either playing for the country or are knocking the door of selection. We want HanumaVihari to get into the thick of things as I think he is a serious player and we have Colin Ingram at five. I think on pitches which turn or are slow, the Indian batsmen will be valued in gold.

During the strategic time out, you had a chance to go out in the middle and speak with Prithvi Shaw. What was discussed?

It is important to keep things simple. When Prithvi was going so well, you need not tell him anything else. He struck the ball so well. You just had to tell him to keep going and finish the game off. Great players when they go in, they finish the game off and I think Prithvi did that. Unfortunately, he got out on 99 and you feel sorry for him. I think he will get a lot more 100s in IPL and in all formats of the game.
